HPD opens new Braeburn storefront - 2/25/2004 The Houston Police Department has opened a new neighborhood storefront at 10101 Fondren, Suite 100, to serve residents of the southwest Fondren area. The new Braeburn storefront will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, to supplement activities at the Fondren Division police station, 11168 Fondren.
Persistence gets law on damaged books changed - 2/25/2004 The Houston Public Library is changing its damaged books policy after a disgruntled Sharpstown resident persistently complained to City Council members. As of Feb. 23, library patrons who pay the appropriate fees for damaged items will be allowed to keep them, said Greg Simpson, manager of planning and government relations for the city library system.

State denies apartment complex funds - 2/22/2004 Sometimes, when community residents work together long enough in a concerted, focused effort, they can move mountains -- or, for southwest Houston civic groups, at least an apartment complex. That's the message the Greater Fondren Super Neighborhood No. 36 president, Elaine Gaskamp, brought back from Dallas last week.
Big Brother is more than role model for Alief youth - 2/22/2004 Chris Payne wanted an older male role model. Greg Hitchens wanted to make a difference. Over the past 2 1/2 years, the two have helped fill a hole in each other's lives. For Payne, 12, whose father is seldom around the house, Hitchens was someone to look up to. For Hitchens, 49, who has no children, Payne is a younger companion who gives him a sense of responsibility.
Precinct 7 constable race draws 16 hopefuls for job - 2/22/2004 Enough candidates to almost field two opposing softball teams are running for Harris County Precinct 7 constable. The precinct has added, after redistricting by Commissioners Court last year, part of southwest Houston and about 100,000 residents to its mid-town, south and southeast service areas.
